Theoptical systemof this telescope for special observations is moveable in two space coordinates. The structure inwhich the telescope ismountedweighs33,069 lbs and consists of a turn- tablewithdrives and twowheel disks rotatingonbearings. It enables a rotationby±90° fromhorizon tohorizon. To safeguard the telescope in caseof overshooting the respective swiveling limits, industrial shock absorbers of the type ML3325M areused asbrakingelements. Should the telescope inadvertently overshoot thepermissible swivel range, theywill safely damp the travel of the valuable telescope. ACE industrial shockabsorbers optimizeportal formachine loading and increaseproductivity. This devicedrivenby piston rodless pneumatic cylinders, inwhich twogripper slides aremoving independently of eachother at speeds of 6.56 ft/sec to8.20 ft/sec, is equippedwith industrial shockabsorbersasbrakesystems. Their function is tostopamass of 55 lbs up to540 times per hour. Themodel MC3350M-1-S was chosen for this application, allowingeasy andextremely accurate adjustment of theendpositions of the adjustable limit stops. In comparison tobrake systemswithother functionprin- ciples, shock absorbers allowhigher travel speeds and shorter cycle sequences.
